Hameln

Hameln boasts one of the most cohesive historic old towns in the Weserbergland region and is characterized by Weser Renaissance architecture. In the 16th and 17th centuries, wealthy merchants and patricians had stately townhouses built using half-timbering and Weser sandstone. Richly decorated gables are a typical feature. Notable examples include the Hochzeitshaus, the Leisthaus, the Stiftsherrenhaus, the Dempterhaus, and the Rattenfängerhaus. The city’s origins date back to the early Middle Ages. After the fortifications were demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, the city was able to expand beyond its medieval core. Historic streetscapes and townhouses continue to shape the appearance of the city center to this day.
