Göttingen is a university town steeped in tradition in southern Lower Saxony. Its historic center is still characterized by medieval street layouts, churches, and numerous half-timbered houses. Notable buildings include the Old Town Hall, the core of which dates back to the 13th century, the Gothic churches of St. Johannis and St. Jacobi, and townhouses from various eras. Parts of the former city fortifications have been preserved in today’s city wall. Since the founding of Georg-August University in 1737, university and scientific buildings have had a significant influence on the city’s development. During World War II, the Old Town was spared widespread destruction compared to many other German cities, allowing a large portion of its historic buildings to be preserved. The city’s landmark is the Gänseliesel Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall.
