Butzbach

Butzbach is located at the transition from the Taunus to the Wetterau and boasts a remarkably well-preserved historic old town. The settlement, which was granted city status in 1321, developed within a fortified medieval city layout, of which remnants of the walls and towers still remain. The market square is particularly distinctive, with its cohesive ensemble of half-timbered houses from various eras. Other significant architectural landmarks include the medieval St. Mark’s Church, Solms Castle, and the Landgrave’s Castle, which was expanded in the early 17th century to serve as the residence of the Hesse-Butzbach branch of the family and now partially serves as city hall. Despite later urban expansion and industrialization, the historic center, with its narrow streets, half-timbered buildings, and former noble estates, has been largely preserved.
